Terms of Service
28 October 2026 · v2026-10-28
These terms govern the use of the Monsieur François app. You accept them when you create an account; please read them first.
Service provider
The Monsieur François app and the services in it are provided by Joanna Wargalla, ul. Zawiszy 4 lok. 1, 01-167 Warszawa, Poland ("we"). You can contact us at contact@monsieurfrancois.app.
Acceptance of these terms
When creating an account, you accept these Terms of Service and confirm that you have read the Privacy Policy; we record which versions you accepted and when. The contract for the provision of the service is concluded when the account is created and runs for an indefinite period, until the account is deleted. A contract for a subscription or a Louis d’or pack is concluded when the store confirms the purchase.
Description of the service
Monsieur François is a mobile app for learning French, including flashcards, quizzes, grammar exercises, reading and listening texts, conversation scenarios, practice material for French exams (DELF, DALF, TCF, TEF) and for the school-leaving exam (matura), and AI features: the AI Assistant and role-plays, text checks, and spoken conversations with Monsieur François (François Live). You need an account and a phone or tablet with Android 7.0 or later or iOS 16.4 or later; newer versions of the app may raise these requirements, and the store listing shows the current ones. Core features work offline; some (login, progress sync, the AI features, the friends leaderboard, leagues and Défi) require an internet connection, and François Live also a microphone and a stable connection.
Your account
You must be at least 13 to create an account; between 13 and 16 (inclusive), only if a parent or guardian agrees, which the person registering confirms at registration. Some features have higher age limits: the AI features are for account holders aged 16 or over, and weekly leagues for those aged 17 or over. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for all activity on your account. Information you provide at registration, including your age, must be accurate. Each account is intended for a single person. Using services over the internet carries typical risks, such as malware, attempts to obtain data by deception (phishing) or someone taking over an account after learning its password. We never ask for your password by email; use a password you do not use anywhere else, and install the app only from Google Play or the App Store.
Acceptable use
You may not use the app in a way that breaks the law, attempt unauthorized access to other accounts or to our infrastructure, or place excessive load on the service (e.g. through automated bots) in a way that degrades it for other users. You may not provide unlawful content either, including in messages to the AI features, in your own word list or in feedback sent from the app.
Premium and payments
Premium gives full access to the course (including vocabulary reviews with no daily limit) and removes ads. Premium Plus includes everything in Premium plus the AI features; it is offered only to account holders aged 16 or over. Both are auto-renewing subscriptions for 3, 6 or 12 months, bought as in-app purchases through Google Play or the App Store. Before you buy, the app shows a purchase summary — the price including VAT as given by the store, the period, how renewal works and, where it applies, the free trial — and the store shows the price and period again and takes the payment; payments are subject to the store's terms. A subscription renews automatically for the same period at the price then in force unless you cancel it in your store account settings before the renewal date set by the store's rules; after cancelling, you keep access until the end of the period already paid for. Deleting your account or uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription. After a purchase we send a confirmation to the email address of your account. The store takes the payment and, under its own rules, issues the purchase document — a receipt or a VAT invoice; we do not issue invoices for store purchases. The app explains where to download it next to the purchases (“Invoice and proof of purchase”). If a store offers a free trial for a plan, it includes limited access to the AI features (a smaller AI allowance and up to 5 minutes of François Live) and, unless you cancel it in time, becomes a paid subscription when it ends. A subscription belongs to the app account it was first activated on; signed in to that account, you can restore it on another device with "Restore purchases". Louis d’or packs are one-off purchases: the Louis d’or are added to your account once our server has confirmed the payment with the store. The same goes for packs of extra François Live minutes (30 or 60 minutes): the minutes are added once the payment is confirmed (see AI features and limits). Likewise packs of extra messages (50 or 150) and the 30-day plan with a higher daily message limit take effect once the payment is confirmed, and the plan does not renew automatically (see AI features and limits); before you buy the plan, the purchase summary shows the dates it will run. Minors may make purchases only with the consent of a parent or guardian.
Right of withdrawal and refunds
If you are a consumer in the European Union or the European Economic Area, you generally have the right to withdraw from a contract concluded at a distance within 14 days, without giving a reason. Purchases in the app are made through Google Play or the App Store, so withdrawal and refunds go through the store you bought from, under its procedure (in Google Play: your order history; in the App Store: reportaproblem.apple.com); you can also write to us at contact@monsieurfrancois.app and we will help. You can withdraw by any clear statement, for example by email; you may use the model withdrawal form (Annex 2 to the Polish Consumer Rights Act, Annex I(B) to Directive 2011/83/EU), but you do not have to. Louis d’or packs are digital content delivered immediately: the right of withdrawal expires once delivery has begun, provided that before the purchase — by ticking the statement in the purchase summary — you expressly consented to immediate delivery and acknowledged that you would thereby lose the right of withdrawal. François Live minute packs and message packs are a service provided at your request: if in the purchase summary you asked for it to start straight away and acknowledged that you would lose the right of withdrawal once the whole pack has been used, that right expires once the whole pack has been used, and if you withdraw earlier you may have to pay for the part used. The 30-day plan with a higher message limit is provided on the dates shown: if you asked for it to start before the withdrawal period ends and you withdraw during that period, you may have to pay in proportion to the time it was in use. The purchase confirmation email repeats the statement you made. A subscription is provided from the moment of purchase: if you withdraw within 14 days after asking in the purchase summary for it to start straight away, you may have to pay for the part of the service provided until the withdrawal, in proportion to the price, as far as the law allows. When a Louis d’or pack is refunded, its Louis d’or are taken back (see Louis d’or); when a François Live minute pack is refunded, its minutes are taken back, and when a message pack is refunded, its messages are; a refunded 30-day plan stops applying (see AI features and limits); when a subscription is refunded or revoked, access to the features it unlocked ends. These terms do not limit refunds a store grants under its own policy, or your rights under mandatory law.
AI features and limits
The AI features — François Live, the AI Assistant and role-plays, and text checks — are part of Premium Plus and available only to account holders aged 16 or over with a confirmed email address. Monsieur François and the other characters in these features are not real people: their voice and replies are generated by artificial intelligence (OpenAI models). AI replies are generated automatically and may contain mistakes — they do not replace a teacher or an official exam. Premium Plus includes a monthly AI allowance, counted per calendar month (UTC) and shared by François Live, the AI Assistant and role-plays, text checks and François’s notes after each call. With a paid subscription the allowance always covers at least 20 minutes of François Live a month if you use it for calls alone; what you use for chats, text checks and notes comes out of the same allowance, so fewer minutes of Live may then remain. The app shows how many minutes are left; the actual number depends on the current cost of the AI service and may be higher than 20. A free trial has a smaller allowance and at most 5 minutes of Live. Unused allowance does not carry over to the next month, except as described below for a service pause. Further limits apply: up to 15 minutes of François Live a day (UTC), up to 10 minutes per call, and up to 100 messages a day to the AI Assistant, role-plays and text checks together. On top of the allowance you can buy packs of extra François Live minutes (30 or 60 minutes, one-off purchases in the store). Pack minutes are used only for François Live calls, and only once no allowance minutes are left for the day; the 15-minute daily limit does not apply to them, but the 10-minute limit per call and the service pause described below do. They do not expire at the end of the month. Using them requires an active Premium Plus — if the subscription ends, they wait until it is renewed — and being 16 or over; they are lost when the account is deleted. If the store refunds a pack, its minutes are taken back; if they have already been used, the shortfall is deducted from minutes you buy later. You can also buy more messages for the AI Assistant, role-plays and text checks: a pack of 50 or 150 messages (a one-off purchase) or a 30-day plan that raises the daily limit from 100 to 200 messages, enlarges the monthly AI allowance while it runs and does not renew automatically (a further plan starts when the previous one ends). Pack messages do not expire at the end of the month and are used only once no messages are left within the daily limit or the monthly allowance is used up; the service pause described below applies to them. Using them and the plan requires an active Premium Plus and being 16 or over; they are lost when the account is deleted. If the store refunds a pack, its messages are taken back (if they have already been used, the shortfall is deducted from messages you buy later); a refunded plan stops applying. Our server counts the minutes from the start of a call; leaving the app ends the call, and if the app cannot report the end of a call (for example because it was closed abruptly), the call is ended at its time limit and counted up to that limit. To protect the service against abuse and unexpected cost increases, there is also a daily limit on AI spending for the whole service: when it is reached, the AI features are paused for all users until midnight UTC. They may also be unavailable during an outage at the AI provider. A pause does not use up your allowance. If a pause caused by the daily limit happened in a month in which you used AI with a paid subscription, the unused part of that month's allowance carries over to the next month. Do not share sensitive data or other people's data in AI conversations, and use François Live in a way that does not pass on the voices of people nearby without their knowledge.
Pictures of Monsieur François
Monsieur François is a fictional character created for this course; he is not a real person. The pictures of him in the app, on our website and in store listings are illustrations generated with the help of artificial intelligence, and any resemblance to a real person is coincidental. Where François appears to speak or write to you, that is the content of the app or, in the AI features, the output of an AI model, as described in "AI features and limits" — not a message from a human tutor.
Louis d’or
Louis d’or are a virtual currency that works only inside the app. You earn them by studying, for daily and weekly quests, for streak milestones and for passing L’Épreuve de François (together up to 1,500 a day), and as rewards in leagues, Défi and referrals; you can also buy Louis d’or packs in the store. All rewards are fixed amounts shown in the app; none depends on chance. Louis d’or are spent on things like hints, streak freezes, repairing a streak and gifts for friends; when you spend, earned Louis d’or are used first. For each day without study that no streak freeze covers, the app takes 100 Louis d’or — for at most 3 days per return — only from Louis d’or earned in the app and never more than you have of them, so this fine never takes the balance below zero. If you reach your daily goal on the day you come back, the fines for that absence are returned. A streak of at least 3 days broken by 1 to 3 missed days can be repaired once every 30 days for 200 Louis d’or, on the day you come back; the missed days then count as covered and their fines are returned. Learners under 18 can pay for a repair only with Louis d’or earned in the app. Returned fines do not count toward the daily limit. Learners under 18, and learners whose age the app does not know, are never fined for missed days — a missed day then only breaks the streak. Purchased Louis d’or are never taken as a fine and never used to pay off fines. If your account still has unpaid fines from an earlier version of the app, they are paid off only from Louis d’or you earn. If the store refunds a Louis d’or pack, the Louis d’or from that pack are taken back; if you have already spent them, the missing amount is recorded as a negative balance, which is paid off from Louis d’or you earn later. The same happens if the same Louis d’or were spent on two devices while offline. Our server keeps the balance and corrects entries that break the rules (for example above the daily limit). Louis d’or earned on a device count once they reach our server within 8 days; Louis d’or earned on a device that stays offline for longer may not be counted. Louis d’or have no cash value, cannot be exchanged for money or moved to another account, and are lost when the account is deleted, including purchased Louis d’or not yet spent — the app reminds you of this before the account is deleted.
Intellectual property
The app's code, texts and educational content are protected by copyright and belong to us or are used under appropriate licences. Some of the illustrations are created with the help of artificial intelligence tools. The course content — the French texts, exercises and explanations, and their translations into the other languages of the app — was prepared under our editorial direction with the help of artificial intelligence (language models, not machine-translation services) and checked by us with automated checks and editorial review; it may still contain mistakes, and we correct them as we find them. The pronunciation and listening recordings are generated by a speech synthesiser (synthetic voices); they are not recordings of human voice artists. The names of the exams DELF, DALF, TCF and TEF belong to their respective owners (for DELF and DALF, France Éducation international; for TCF, France Éducation international; for TEF, the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry); Monsieur François is not affiliated with them or endorsed by them, and the exam material in the app consists of our own practice texts and exercises, not official exam papers. You may not copy or redistribute the app's content for commercial purposes without permission. Without our permission you may also not retrieve the course content, recordings or vocabulary database by automated means (scripts, bots, bulk downloading), copy them in whole or in substantial part, use them to train artificial intelligence models, or use them to create competing courses or apps. Subject to rules that cannot be excluded by contract, you may not reverse engineer the app's code either. The course content collections have the protection given to the maker of a database. These restrictions do not affect using the app as intended, for your own learning.
Liability
We work to keep the content and the service accurate and available, but we cannot guarantee uninterrupted, error-free operation — for example during maintenance, outages at our providers or without a connection. Course content and AI replies are learning aids and do not replace a teacher or an official exam. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability where the law does not allow it to be excluded or limited, and nothing in them limits your rights as a consumer, including those described in the Complaints section.
Complaints
If the app or a paid feature does not work as described in these terms, or you have another complaint about the service, write to contact@monsieurfrancois.app. Please give the email address of your account, describe the problem and when it occurred, and say what you would like us to do. We will reply by email within 14 days of receiving your complaint; if we do not, the complaint is deemed accepted. If you are a consumer and the digital content or service does not conform to the contract, you have the rights provided by law — in particular to have it brought into conformity and, where the law allows, to a price reduction or to terminate the contract. Payments and refunds are handled by the store you bought from, so for a refund also use the store's procedure (see Right of withdrawal and refunds). As a consumer you may also use out-of-court complaint and redress procedures — in Poland, for example, the help of a municipal or district consumer ombudsman (rzecznik konsumentów) or mediation or arbitration at the provincial trade inspectorate (WIIH).
Friends leaderboard and minors
The friends leaderboard is optional. A learner aged 16 or under may use it only with the consent of a parent or guardian, confirmed through a link sent to their email address, which must not be the address of any account in the app; by confirming, the parent or guardian states that they are the parent or legal guardian. Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising how their child uses their phone, the internet and the app, and can withdraw consent at any time. A friend code is for adding people you know; it must not be used to harass others or to inflate points artificially (for example with automation or extra accounts). We may remove a profile that breaks these rules from the leaderboard.
Leagues and gifts
Weekly leagues are open to learners aged 17 or over. Louis d’or rewards for podium places are granted automatically when the week ends. Louis d’or are a currency inside the app only and cannot be exchanged for money. Gifts for friends are bought with Louis d’or; they never move Louis d’or or any other value between accounts. Artificially inflating points, for example with automation or extra accounts, is not allowed — in that case we may remove an account from the leagues or take back rewards granted.
Weekly Défi
The Louis d’or reward for a reached shared goal is granted automatically to every member who accepted the invitation. The fair-play rules described for the leagues apply here too: artificially inflated points may lead us to take the reward back.
Referrals
A new account may enter one referral code within 14 days of being created. Once that account has a confirmed email address and has studied on 7 different days, it receives 100 Louis d’or, and the account that shared the code receives 150 Louis d’or — the latter for at most 5 people in any 30 days. Creating accounts only to collect these rewards is not allowed — in particular fake accounts, several accounts of the same person or accounts created automatically — and we may take back rewards obtained that way. We tell you in the app or by email when a reward is taken back; you can appeal by writing to contact@monsieurfrancois.app, and we will reply within 14 days. The rewards are Louis d’or and follow the rules in the Louis d’or section.
Termination and account deletion
You can delete your account at any time from the app Settings — this is immediate and irreversible, and removes your progress and Louis d’or, including purchased Louis d’or, and any unused purchased François Live minutes. Deleting the account does not cancel a store subscription — do that in your Google Play or App Store account settings. We may suspend or delete an account that seriously breaks these terms, for example by attacking the service, artificially inflating points or harassing other users; where the nature of the breach allows, we will first tell you by email what is wrong and give you the chance to respond. If we suspend or delete an account for reasons that are not on your side, we refund a proportionate part of the price for the unused period of the subscription and the value of unused purchased Louis d’or, minutes and messages. For a serious breach that continued despite a warning (or where a warning was not possible), no such refund is due. This does not affect your rights under mandatory law, including with regard to the unused part of a paid subscription.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms for important reasons, such as new or changed features, changes in the law or in the stores' rules, or the security of the service. We tell you about changes in the app before they take effect: after signing in, the app shows the new version for you to accept. A change that is unfavourable to learners with a paid subscription or purchased packs is announced at least 30 days in advance, also by email; other changes at least 14 days in advance. Changes solely in your favour or required by law may apply from the day they are announced. If you do not accept them, you can terminate the contract free of charge before they take effect by deleting your account, and cancel your subscription in the store — for an unfavourable change we then refund a proportionate part of the price for the unused period; your rights under mandatory law regarding the unused part of a paid subscription are not affected.
Language versions
These terms and the Privacy Policy are published in several languages with the same content. If the language versions differ, the version more favourable to the consumer applies. This does not deprive you, as a consumer, of the protection given to you by the mandatory provisions of the law of the country where you live.
Governing law and contact
These terms are governed by Polish law. If you are a consumer, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory provisions of the law of the country where you habitually reside, and you may bring a claim before the courts that the law makes competent, including those of your place of residence where the law so provides. For questions about these terms, write to contact@monsieurfrancois.app.
